God Uses Weak Vessels

Devotion: Wednesday, July 11

Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?” So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” Judges 6:14-15

I love this story! The Midianites are wearing the Israelites out. Gideon is hiding away threshing wheat so the Midianites won’t take his food from him. While he hides for fear, the Angel of the LORD appears to him and says, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!” V12. Somehow, hiding for fear and being a “mighty man of valor” just don’t seem to go together. Gideon knew he wasn’t a man of valor. He even explained that he was the weakest in all the tribe of Manasseh. BUT GOD didn’t see Gideon for who he was, but for who he would become in the power of the Lord. It is easy to focus on our weaknesses and on what we can’t do. However, the Lord calls on us to focus on His greatness and what He will do through us as surrendered vessels. When the Lord saved you, you became a chosen vessel for His glory. Don’t look at yourself and say “I can’t.” Instead look to the Lord and say, “ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
