Devotion: Tuesday, July 17:
Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18
I am currently teaching a series on spiritual warfare which I have titled, “Fighting to Win.” I have started the series with an emphasis that we must be aware of the enemy’s tactics. In yesterday’s devotion we looked at how one of the devil’s main tasks is to be an accuser of the brethren. It is vital that we guard our hearts so we don’t allow him to fulfill his purpose of accusation and division through us.
We, likewise, must guard against the spirit of pride. In Isaiah 14:13 & 14, on 5 different occasions Lucifer said, “I will.” “I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.” We learn his pride, which led to his rebellion, got him thrown out of heaven.
Billy Graham often said that he was very much afraid of pride in his life and prayed for the Spirit of God to quickly convict him when it was present. I think all Christians should take the same attitude. After all “God resists the proud;” and I know I don’t want God opposing me. The purpose of Satan’s accusations is to seek to bring division. Pride makes Satan’s plan easy to fulfill but when we choose humility we undermine Satan’s plans to divide.
