Devotion: Friday, June 8:
And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. Revelation 1:17
I try to take the opportunity to ask people about their relationship with the Lord. On many occasions I have had people respond with, “Me and the man upstairs have an understanding.” When I hear that statement my mind usually goes to the first chapter of Revelation. When Christ walked the earth, John was known as the apostle whom Jesus loved; he was kind of like a best friend. Yet when this same John saw a revelation of the glorified Christ, he fell at His feet as dead.
It deeply concerns me how casually people talk about the Christ. He is not the man upstairs. He is the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings. He is Savior, Creator, Judge of all, Almighty One, Ruler of all, the One to whom every knee will bow and declare His worth. He will reign for all eternity.
As far as us having an understanding with Him – if our understanding doesn’t come into line with His understanding, we are sadly deceived. His understanding is that we are all sinners and none of us is good enough to gain eternal life on our merit. We must recognize He is the perfect and only Savior and Lord. We must repent of our ways and place our faith completely in what He did to offer us forgiveness and eternal life.
Praise God, Jesus is our friend. But when we talk like He is on the same level as us, it gives clear indication we really don’t understand who He is.
